2K Hires Apex Legends Developer to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Lukewarm Reception
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a distinct vision.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to better meet player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Hires
This announcement mirrors a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's announcement:
Team—
I understand you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a sharper brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to mind and overhauled the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to achieve its potential to our audience.
The trust in this project grows every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the latest Studio Head of the team. After a period of talks, he comes aboard us on next week.
His management and experience in the PVP shooter field is vast, having devoted the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most popular series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to continue witnessing the evolution of the game in the weeks to ahead.
David
Background of the Incoming Head
The appointee currently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, 31st Union presented the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Face the competition with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that evolve every match. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, gamble everything, and trust your group can secure victory? The decision is yours."
The game lacks an announced launch window or consoles, but enthusiasts can anticipate more updates as creation continues.
