At the same time, she seems to be making her personal new beginning, since this seems a new kind of book – documentarian, authentically narrative. However it proves to be packed with the recurring issues and aesthetics as earlier books.

The third thread involves the narrative of a homicide of one directionless individual by another in a locality mostly forsaken by forward-thinking policies only a brief drive from Catt's rural residence in a remote part of Minnesota.

I was destined to be disappointed when I hoped this fresh tone could continue through the novel. Kraus says here that she dislikes the enjoyment readers like me have taken from I Love Dick; she's committed to disruption, to the messy artistic approach she echoes from her idol Kathy Acker, and the void and recurrence of her earlier works returns in the middle section. Catt Greene is trying to renovate multiple decrepit residences in the city's most challenging districts while moving between Minnesota and LA, unsuccessful in assisting Paul curb his addiction. She experiences powerlessness as Paul cycles through poorly supported positions as an recovery specialist in a environment propelled by the hostility and dread that powers Trump's victory. Multiple pages are devoted about Catt being cancelled on a platform, her occupation changed from "novelist" to "property owner" on Wikipedia. The author still appears to invest excessive emotion about this. At one point she remarks that she's looking into the killing so that before departing the state, "she might be able to learn something about an America that her social media opponents would be unable to grasp, would not even see".
