As any major awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game missed out that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
